Bangkok Eastern & Oriental Express Train: Isan - Bai Sii ceremony Prasat Sikhoraphum Phanom Rung Chiang Mai  Lampang Khao Yai National Park Gran Monte Vineyard Koh Samui Bangkok

 

Day 1. To Bangkok
Morning depart from London Heathrow on direct Thai Airways flight to Bangkok.

Day 2. Bangkok
Arrive Bangkok. Met on arrival then transfer to the hotel. Two nights Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Day 3. Thonburi Klongs, Grand Palace Tour and Lunch
After breakfast, discover the fascinating canals (Klongs) of Bangkok with their colour, vivacity and exotic aromas! Visit the Grand Palace and see the Emerald Buddha. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 4. Eastern & Oriental Express Journey
Board the gleaming green carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express. Greeted by stewards in immaculate Thai uniforms on arrival. Later, in the Bar Car there will be a welcome cocktail reception hosted by the Train Manager. Relax over dinner. A pianist tinkles the ivories playing nostalgic melodies in the Bar Car. Overnight on train.

Day 5. Isan - Village Life, Bai Sii ceremony and Prasat Sikhoraphum
Excursion to a traditional Isan village. Visits in the village include the local Temple, school, watch women weaving "matmee" cloth (silk or cotton) or bamboo mats on home looms and learn about the complex system of rice cultivation. Also participate in the Bai Sii (sacred thread) ceremony performed by the village elders. Return to the train for lunch. Late afternoon visit Prasat Sikhoraphum, a beautifully restored 12th C. Khmer Temple. Sunset cocktail reception. Overnight on train.

Day 6. Phanom Rung and Village visit,
Morning excursion to Phanom Rung, a majestic and highly revered 12th C. Khmer Temple. Visit a nearby village famous for its silk weavers. Overnight on train.

Day 7. Chiang Mai – choice of excursions with Lanna style lunch
Today discover the northern province of Chiang Mai, the ancient Lanna Kingdom. This fascinating region pre-dates the Siamese settlements further south, including Sukhothai and Bangkok by several hundred years. There are three tours to choose from: 1.Visit a working elephant camp. 2. Tour one of Chiang Mai's most revered Buddhist Temples. 3. Spend the afternoon shopping at some of the city's best boutiques: Chiang Mai is renowned for its crafts. All excursions include a memorable Lanna-style lunch. Overnight on train.

Day 8. Lampang
After breakfast arrive in Lampang, another northern Thai city rich in history and culture. Explore the city in its trademark pony carriages. These delightful carts originally were imported from England for use by Thai nobility in Bangkok, but, with the introduction of the automobile, were sent to the provinces. The leisurely carriage ride concludes at Ban Sao Nak (House of Many Pillars). Built in 1895 on 116 pillars it is now a museum. After touring the house and gardens take morning tea on the lawn before returning to the Eastern & Oriental Express. Lunch on board. Dinner. Overnight on train.

Day 9. Khao Yai National Park and Gran Monte Vineyard
Early morning excursion to Khao Yai National Park, Thailand’s oldest reserve. A naturalist will explain the habitats and wildlife. Take a fascinating hike along one of the park's leafy walking trails for a close up view of unique plants and flowers. Continue the tour by coach to the celebrated Monte Vineyard. Gran Monte bottles its own wine under the direction of Thailand’s first female oenologist, Ms. Nikki Visootha Lohitnavy. The tour includes a leisurely lunch, wine tasting and a walk through the vineyard. Return to Eastern & Oriental Express in the late afternoon. Evening “farewell” cocktail party. Dinner. Overnight on train.

Day 10. To Koh Samui via Bangkok
Morning arrival in Bangkok. Transfer to airport for flight to Koh Samui. Five nights Napasai Resort.

Day 11 – 14. At Leisure
Set in a grove of cashew trees, Napasai is a true Orient-Express paradise on the north coast of Thailand’s Koh Samui. Nestling besides a beautiful sandy beach with a backdrop of lush tropical gardens and turquoise seas. Life is as quiet or as lively as you desire, dip in the glorious crystal clear waters, relax in the spa or simply... do nothing.

Day 15. To London via Bangkok
Morning transfer to the airport to board Thai Airways flight back to London via Bangkok.
