I was born and brought up in Kashmir, India in a typical village surrounded by the beauty of the Pir Panjal mountains. My parents were passionate about education, and did everything to encourage me: when I finished primary school, my grandfather and father stayed awake all night to make a copper ink pot for me. They gilded it with nickel and gave it to me as a present. This has left a lasting impression on my mind, which I still relive at times. I graduated in sciences, and my parents wanted me to become a doctor. Not knowing where it would lead, I took a job in a hotel and then another in a travel company earning £2.75 a month. I read everything I could about destinations and cultures, and especially about Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. This stood me in good stead: I was invited to accompany a group from the Harvard Travel Club in Boston to the mountains of Kashmir, and then to talk about the Himalayas at their annual event. I accompanied many tourist groups to Ladakh, and as I drove through the high passes and along the banks of the River Indus, the river, its varied forms and its ability to nurture life, stuck in my mind. The river was at the heart of my dream when I set up Indus in 1995. Bespoke travel to India was little-known in those days: most holiday makers travelled in group tours arranged by major operators. I wanted Indus’ trips to be much more personal than this. Indus is celebrating its 20th birthday this year, and the company is supported by an excellent team of local and dedicated destination specialists. We are just like a family, a happy bunch of people working together to bring diverse tourism products to our valued customers, many of whom come back time and again, having built a personal relationship with their holiday consultant.
Planning and designing your holiday itinerary is almost as exciting as the journey itself and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your holiday with our destination experts by telephone, e-mail or visiting them personally at our office in Harrow.

India - Bhutan - Nepal

I was born and brought up in Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas. My father, being a civil servant was transferred frequently from one place to another; as a result I had to move frequently with the family so the Travel bug caught me at early stage of my life. I graduated in Science for starters, and followed up with a Masters in Tourism for main course to satisfy my appetite for travel. I have been enjoying desert ever since! My journey into the Travel Industry started in 1994, travelling extensively in India, Nepal, Tibet & Bhutan escorting groups and individual travellers alike. My most memorable experiences have been to mingle with the locals and get under the skin of their traditions, myths and legends. I have spent the last 18 years designing tailor-made holidays to India, Nepal & Bhutan for clients many of whom over the years through repeated trips have become more friends than clients.
It gives me immense pleasure to share my experiences and inspire others to explore the hidden treasures of these countries.
Planning and designing your itinerary is almost as exciting as the journey itself and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss all your options at our offices.

Contact me for:
India - Nepal - Bhutan & Far East

I was born in Singapore as my dad was in the navy there, we lived there just 4 years, but I think that's where my love for the Far East comes from, I have travelled a lot in that area, and find it the most exciting part of the world. I have travelled in all parts of the world extensively though.

I have grown up in Somerset and after secondary school and college I took my first job in a travel agency in Bristol. After 3 years leaning the ropes, I started my own business Swift Travel with a shop in Bristol which grew over 23 years into 3 shops, and 30 staff and a business travel department which was very successful.

After gaining a lot of loyal client's I decided to work from home which has been very successful for the last 15 years, and I have gained several celebrities including Russell Brand who loves India, and has stayed at Taj hotels.

Travel is my passion, I always get excited about going somewhere new, there is so much to see and I have a long list! Nature trips are a highlight for me and I have been fortunate to go to Borneo and see Orangutans in the wild.

I have a dog called Willow and like to go to the gym, both of which keep me fit !

Elaine MacGregor is an experienced traveller who combines a wide knowledge of Genealogy with an infectious enthusiasm for India, and broad experience of organising and managing specialist tours to the Indian sub-continent, as well as to Africa, Australia and the USA. Her consuming interest in Genealogy began, as it does with so many people, in researching the lives of her own ancestors whose association with India reaches back into the 18th Century. Appreciating that one is never too old learn, she is currently studying for a Diploma in Genealogy with The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies at Canterbury, having already gained Certificates in Life and Local History at the University of Sussex. For over a decade Elaine was a trustee of FIBIS, and in no small way helped it to become the prominent specialist organisation that it is today. Indeed it was with the understanding of this charity that she organised the highly successful “Indian Mutiny“ visit to India in 2007. She is a regular volunteer at ESRO, where she assists visitors with their own research and also helps out as a conservator, cleaning and preserving original ancient documents. In a past life she has written several best-selling books on practical patisserie and sugar craft and presented such techniques on videos for broadcasting. It was while engaged in this activity that she conducted six overseas tours for groups of cake decorators. She is still called upon to act as a specialist judge at Hotelympia for the Cookery and Food Association as well as other Cake Craft exhibitions, although these days she no longer has enough time for teaching in this area.

I am a botanist by training, with a PhD in plant physiology and a broader interest in plant ecology. In recent years my focus has been on teaching rather than research and I have taught interdisciplinary science with the UK's Open University, as well as whole organism biology at Durham University. Teaching at both universities has included running field trips on which students learned about assessing biodiversity, the impact of environmental factors on plant growth and processes such as succession. I am really keen to encourage people to look at how organisms interact with their environment, particularly at a time when we can see that environment changing. I would like to do this in Kasmir and Ladakh by looking at how the vegetation changes with factors such as altitude and rainfall and also at how primary succession allows the colonisation of bare ground. The Himalayas, with their natural beauty and the fact that so many British garden plants have their origins here, make an ideal location for this.

Sri Lanka - Maldives

My interest in travel naturally stemmed from my father’s passion for travel, after university I joined the company straight away. Starting from the grass roots I started my journey in admin, then operations, followed by marketing and then onto sales. Over the last decade I have been very fortunate to have visited numerous countries including India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Morocco, Jordan, Malaysia, Croatia, Finland, France & Turkey. It is difficult to pick a favourite but I love India, Turkey & Sri Lanka. I am delighted to specialise in journeys to Sri Lanka & Maldives.

Most memorable experiences -
South India - sifting rice with the locals on the road side and  attempting to fish on the back-waters  Sri Lanka – Visiting Nuwara Eliya – staying at the Tea Factory and learning about the tea production process from picking to packing, climbing the gigantic Sigiriya Rock and visiting Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.

India

Born and brought up in a cosmopolitan city - Mumbai, India love every bit of hustle bustle that came with it. The passion for travel came to me or rather say inculcated in me at a very early age. My father, being a captain in the merchant navy, I sailed a lot with him, seeing different countries, places and meeting people from different cultures. As I grew up the frequency of travel reduced, school and college took more prominent place in my life, but my love for travel was ever growing. My roots being from Kerala-the Gods own country, I was always inclined to the beauty of the back waters, coconut lagoons and the coastal food. India being such a vast and versatile country, there is always an element of beauty, interest and surprises in whatever you do. The breath taking scenery and the stunning landscape would blow your mind off. Came to the UK in the year 2006 & since then has been working in this industry. I joined Indus Tours in the year 2011, as an Operation Executive. At the onset, was handling the operations for India as a destination, but now am responsible for the Far East Operations as well. Indus Tours has given me the opportunity to exhibit my skills and experience, knowledge which was developed and gathered over the years.

I was born a traveller spending formative years in Germany and the Far East….since then I’ve lived way up north on the amazing Shetland islands, deep in the heart of the Emerald Ireland…….on a boat in sunny Malta, chilled out in the laid back Caribbean and currently live Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Ahhhh….and not forgetting sybaritic spells in India and Sri Lanka. Not long after indus, as it was then, started up in Harrow I met Yasin, quite by chance, at a Sri Lankan reception in London…. he asked me what I did and I replied….’I write on Food and Travel’…... ‘A Wordsmith’ he said - I need one…….and the rest is history. I work, as a freelancer for indusexperiences, hand in hand with Team members to write the Indus family of brochures, research specialist tours, do trips to keep myself up to date and on occasion accompany guests on tours. Memories of my travels with indusexperiences will stay with me forever…………an elephant taking off my sunhat and crushing it as, quite obviously, he couldn’t bless me with a clump of straw on my head or listening to cricket deep in the vast sand dunes of the Great Thar desert on an old transistor radio whilst sipping English tea and tiny cucumber sandwiches from a bone china cup!
