Sunday 03 February
Arrive in Mumbai at 11:05 and transfer from the airport to the hotel to check in at the Taj Mahal Palace, the heritage hotel which was the subject of the acclaimed BBC series Hotel India. You will have time to rest in the morning, and then after lunch will visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly the Victoria Terminus), an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the Indian Gothic style. This will be followed by a walk around the bustling railway station and its environs, soaking up the atmosphere. There will be time to observe both the architectural features and signs of everyday life, and to make sketches and photographs to use as the basis for future paintings. B
Monday 04 February
Early in the morning, you will board the train and travel by rail to Ahmedabad. The railways are still the most important transport artery in India, and you’ll see every aspect of life - rich and poor, urban and rural, natural and manmade - from the windows of the train. You might also take time to sketch your fellow passengers, their colourful attire and intricate jewellery, their expressions and their postures. This will be a long day, but an entertaining one. The train is comfortable, air conditioned, and meals and tea are served onboard. When you do arrive in Ahmedabad, you will check in at The House of MG, the urban heritage hotel which will be your home for the next two nights. B L D
Tuesday 05 February
Ahmedabad is not on India’s usual tourist trail, but it deserves to be. The city’s history dates back at least a thousand years, and the cityscape includes architectural influences from Persia as well as indigenous styles. Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright have both made important architectural contributions, too. Today will be divided into two parts. The first will be a visit to the Calico Museum, which is the finest textile museum in India. Learn about the history of textiles in Gujarat, and admire the fine samples on display. The museum will be followed by a fascinating heritage walking tour, which will include the bazaars and narrow lanes of the Old City, Jain temples, the Jami Masjid, and the Bhadra Fort. There is ample material here to inspire your artistic endeavours; managing to capture it all on paper or canvas is a rather more significant challenge! B L D
Wednesday 06 February
This morning you will continue your journey by road from Ahmedabad to Poshina, a Gujarati town famed for its Jain and Hindu temples and shrines. En route you will stop at the Sun Temple in Modhera, which was built in the early 11th century and is dedicated to the solar deity Surya. The temple halls are exquisitely carved with figures and motifs, and there is a vast step well which lends itself to architectural drawing and watercolour painting. There will be time to sit on its steps and draw, guided by Lincoln and Patricia. Throughout your stay in Poshina you will stay in the picturesque Darbargarah Palace a heritage home. B L D
Thursday – Saturday 7-9 February
Poshina has everything that an artist could wish for. The havelis are ornate, the village bustling with life, and the lake is especially scenic. Nothing beats sitting by the water’s edge watching the colours change on the surface and enjoying a picnic between painting sessions. On one of the days you will have the option of an excursion to a nearby Rabari village. The Rabari are an indigenous community in northwestern India; they preserve their traditional way of life herding cattle and camels, and still wear their distinctive dress. B
Sunday 10 February
It’s a wonderful journey from Gujarat into Rajasthan - the place of kings - and on to Udaipur. Udaipur is a magnificent city built around a lake, in the centre of which is the famed Lake Palace. Capturing the reflections of the City Palace and havelis on the surface of the lake is a must for watercolour painters; others might wish to paint the women on the washing ghats, the lively bazaar, or details from the numerous palaces and temples. Your hotel in Udaipur will be Fateh Prakash Palace. B L D
Monday 11 February
Today there will be a full day sightseeing programme in Udaipur so that you can see as many as possible of spectacular sites and gain cultural insight from a knowledgeable local guide. Highlights will include the City Palace and Jag Mandir, the Jagdish Temple, and a walk around part of Lake Pichola. B L D
Tuesday – Thursday 12-14 February
It is approximately 50 miles and an easy drive from Udaipur to Dungarpur. Historically, Dungarpur was an important seat for members of the Mewar ruling family, who built a vast number of temples here. The architecture of these temples, and portraits of the pilgrims who visit them, will provide inspiration for these three days of painting. You will stay at Udai Bilas Palace, a wonderful heritage property right on the lake shore. B L D
Friday 15 February
After a morning at leisure, you will travel to the airport in the early afternoon and fly to Delhi on Air India flight 472, departing at 15:05. The flight time is just over one hour, and you will then transfer to the Pullman Hotel for your last night in India. There will be a farewell dinner with Lincoln, Patricia, and your fellow guests, and you will be able to reflect on your experiences together. B
Saturday 16 February
You will transfer to the airport and fly from Delhi to London on British Airways flight BA 256 at 11:05 to arrive Heathrow same day at 15:10. There is also the option to extend your stay by a few days to visit Agra and Jaipur, or another selection of North India’s fascinating destinations. B

Lincoln & Patricia Seligman
Lincoln travels, paints, and teaches with his wife, Patricia Seligman. Patricia is respected as an artist in her own right, and is the author of numerous books about painting techniques. Together, Lincoln and Patricia will lead Indus Experiences’ fascinating painting tour of India. Join us on this wonderful holiday in India to enjoy a Heritage Walking tour of Mumbai and city of Ahmedabad. Visit the world famous Calico Textile Musuem in Ahmedabad. Paint temples, havelis and local life in Poshina, Udaipur and Dungarpur.
“We were lucky enough earlier this year to have the opportunity to explore again the visual delights, and indeed the painting opportunities, in Rajasthan and Gujarat. No destination on our travels disappointed and we found, both on and off the beaten track, countless landscapes, villages, palaces and people deserving of more of our time. It was hard to tear ourselves away.
Ahmedabad is a bustling city where the old quarter offers wonderful narrow back streets full of magical architecture. The Adalaj step well is as much a vast subterranean cathedral as it is a water supply. And the Siddi Sayed mosque is as impressive for its giant calligraphy murals as for its ornate interiors.
Dungarpur’s Udai Bilas palace is a gem, situated on its own lake with a island temple in the middle. The palace itself and its gardens offer a chance to spread out and paint what’s closest to hand. There’s also a splendid collection of classic cars in the middle of which is a rather exotic bar. The sumptuous Juna Mahal fort is a short distance away. Its unique interiors are opulently decorated and are spread over seven floors.
The Darbargarh palace in Poshina is a favourite - the palace itself is delightful, with excellent rooms, gardens and cuisine - and a charming host who led our picnic expeditions into the countryside to meet the Rabari villagers on their farms. The nearby lake is a spectacular painting opportunity.
Udaipur is a further city experience, albeit with the advantage of looking across a large lake which has its own legendary Lake Palace. It offers both serenity and a hectic city life. You can choose either - if you can tear yourselves away from the textile and clothing shops. If you do you’ll find lots to paint.
And that’s perhaps the richest use of what this wonderful part of India offers.
