Courts & Palaces of India: Mughals, Rajputs & Nizams A Small Group Tour Led by Sue Rollin 07-21 February 2027 Special Interest

The Tour

India has for long been a source of wonder and fascination to Western visitors.  During this tour we visit some of the most spectacular and beautiful monuments of this rich and varied country and glimpse a panorama of India through the ages.  Our tour begins in the modern Indian capital, Delhi, traditionally the site of seven successive cities and the last seat of the British Raj. Here we explore the fort-palace of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as well as Edwin Lutyens’ New Delhi. In Agra we visit Mughal palace buildings, tombs and gardens, culminating in the unparalleled beauty of the Taj Mahal.  Fatehpur Sikri, the ‘City of Victory’, is a perfect ghost city with a beautifully preserved palace complex and huge congregational mosque, built for emperor Akbar in the local red sandstone but abandoned after only fourteen years. Continuing to Jaipur, Bundi and Udaipur in Rajasthan, we discover a land of magnificent palaces, lakes, extraordinary step wells and Hindu and Jain temples as well as an outstanding variety of traditional arts and crafts.  Our journey ends in Hyderabad, former capital of one of the most powerful Indian states and a flourishing centre of Islamic culture. Golconda Fort, on the outskirts of the city, is one of the most impressive citadels in southern India.  The rulers of Golconda and Hyderabad, first the Qutb Shahi sultans, then the Nizams, grew rich on diamonds, thanks to their fabled mines which produced some of the world’s great gems, including the Koh-i-Noor.

Accommodation

In Delhi stay at The Imperial – The iconic Heritage Luxury Hotel established in 1936. In Agra The ITC Mughal is sprawled over 93077sq.m of Mughal-style gardens. In close proximity to the Taj Mahal offers sublime views. Nestled in the heart of the Pink City, situated across 18 acres of meticulously maintained gardens, Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur stands as a lovingly restored gem of Rajasthani heritage. Hotel Haveli Braj Bhushanjee (A Heritage Hotel and Museum) in Bundi is a lovingly restored 200-year-old Haveli. Crafted by Maharana Fateh Singh to graciously host esteemed guests, Taj Fateh Prakash Palace stands as an iconic gem in Udaipur, offering legendary views of Lake Pichola and the majestic Aravalli mountains. To this day, it remains the cherished residence of the royal family, a testament to its timeless allure. Ending the tour in Hyderabad, the Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad, once the regal abode of the Nizams, exudes the refinement of its historic era. Under the meticulous stewardship of Her Highness Princess Esra, the last Nizam’s Turkish wife, each of the 60 rooms and suites within this luxury haven has been fastidiously revitalised. Revel in expansive vistas that unfold over the palace courtyards, offering an encompassing view of the 400-year-old city of Hyderabad below.
