Craft Legacies of South, Central & Western India 31 Oct–17 Nov 2026 A small Group Tour Led by Prof. Pavithra Muddaya Special Interest

This journey is designed for those who wish to experience India beyond the usual landmarks — in the quiet spaces where culture continues to live, breathe, and evolve. Balancing cities with villages, monuments with workshops, it reveals India through craft, community, and continuity. Hidden temples, shared meals, artisan studios, and lingering conversations offer glimpses of a country that invites reflection as much as discovery.

Built on long-standing partnerships, Indus Experiences opens doors to experiences largely unseen, with artisans, designers, and cultural practitioners whose traditions date back centuries.

Led by Prof. Pavithra Muddaya

At the heart of this journey is Pavithra, a lifelong custodian of India’s handloom traditions. For five decades, Pavithra has worked with weaving communities across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, often with the same families over generations. For her, textiles are not commodities, but living relationships built on trust and care.
In 1974, she co-founded Vimor Handloom Foundation in Bengaluru, guided by the belief that the survival of handloom depends on the dignity and continuity of the weaver. In 2019, she established the Museum of Living Textiles to document India’s everyday textile histories. Travelling with Pavithra is less about observing craft, and more about understanding how textiles live: in homes, across landscapes, and through human connections.

Why This Journey

This is not a checklist of destinations. It is an immersive cultural experience shaped by access, relationships and depth.
Unique to Indus Experiences is a network of storytellers — textile designers, scholars, artisans, chefs, wellness practitioners and writers — who quietly sculpt the journey with insight and discernment. They bring decades of hands-on experience in trade, design, production and pedagogy, packing their passion into every interaction. You will leave not just informed, but connected — with a deeper understanding of India’s living craft traditions, and the people who continue to carry them forward.

Unique to this journey, is its rare access to the makers and cultural custodians shaping India’s craft landscapes. From museum walks and atelier visits in Bangalore to time at institutions such as Kalakshetra Foundation along the Coromandel Coast, weaving, embroidery, and temple traditions unfold alongside home-hosted meals and curated exchanges. In Hyderabad, Ikat, Kalamkari, zardozi, and Lambada embroidery are explored against a backdrop of palaces and evening baithaks, while Central India’s Maheshwar and Bagh reveal resilient weaving and block-printing lineages. The journey concludes in Mumbai, where bazaars, galleries, and private conversations bridge village traditions with contemporary global practice.
