Eastern Adventure & Colonial India 13 - 25 November 2023

India as we know it today is, for better or worse, shaped by those who have invaded, ruled, traded with, and left behind their enduring legacy. From the Chinese, the Malay, the Persians, the Mughals, the French, the Danes, the Dutch and of course the British, each have left their mark and have contributed to the richness and diversity which visitors to modern India today experience.

Whilst for some visitors, a visit to the so called, “Golden Triangle” is enough for them to say they have “done India!”, for those who know better there is much still to explore, off the more traditional tourist routes, and through regions where trade and faith have brought visitors for centuries. I invite you to join me, as we travel down the Eastern side of India and into the Deccan and across into the central regions, rediscovering lost communities, forgotten people, and royal palaces along the way.

Well rested, after breakfast we enjoy a full day sightseeing around Kolkata, including visits to the Flower Market and Howrah Bridge; the Magen David & Neveh Shalome Synagogues (There are now less than a dozen Jew’s left in Kolkata, most having moved to Israel or other places around the world, but the synagogues are well kept by their Muslim custodian.)

After a Tram ride on one of the cities ancient trams, we will arrive at the Old Book Market for a wander around the wonderful book stalls and have a coffee at the famous Indian Coffee House, a meeting place for students and in the past, revolutionaries!
If time allows there will also be the opportunity to visit Mother Teressa’s house and perhaps a visit to the final resting place on many Colonial officials at the South Park Street Cemetery and hear all about its ‘ghostly’ visitors. And no visit to Kolkata is completed without a visit to the Victoria Memorial and a wander through its gardens.

Designed to be the cosmis chariot of the sun god Surya, with its seven stone horses representing the seven days of the week, and the enormous 24 stone cartwheels representing the hours of the day, the magnificent carvings and sheer size of it, together with the fact that the community that built it back in the 13th Century effectively disappeared, makes it intriguing.

It is also the technology hub of modern India and has been since it became the first Indian city to have electric lighting in 1905.
Today we will visit the National Gallery of Modern Art, with its extensive collection of pre and post independence art. We visit the current home of the Maharaja at Bangalore Palace, designed to look ‘vaguely like Windsor Castle’! We will stop in at Tipu Sultan’s Palace to admire its frescos and teak pillars, then onto the Venkata-raman Temple and Jamia Masjid, before practicing our haggling skills as we pick up some last minute bargains at nearby Krishnarajendra (KR) Market with its spices, copperware and flower market. What our clients say

Just a quick note to say thank you for organising a really fantastic trip. We all enjoyed Nepal immensely (apart from the Roads!), and my trip to Rajasthan was a real pleasure in every way. Thank you very much indeed, and I would be grateful if you would let your partners in those countries how much we appreciated their services!
